Staying warm for winter

staying Warm in the winter, winter tips, winter clothing, Wildly Intrepid, Lewis Hills

The warm and sunny days bring everyone outside but as soon as the first snowflakes hit the ground they all run indoors. Winter forces way too many people to stay home. Despite the cold weather I try to enjoy our white Canadian winter land. And the best way to do so is by staying warm while preventing hypothermia and frostbite. Although there seems to be way more outdoor adventures in summer, there is something magical and breathtaking about playing among white covered peaks and frozen ponds.

Fresh crisp air keeps me healthy and active and you don't sweat as much during the cold months. Plus winter opens up new activities such as snowboarding, skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, skating and much more. Yet for one to fully enjoy winter activities there are 2 main tips I usually give to my friends; choosing the right clothing and eating plenty of good food.

Tip #1 The "Right" Winter Clothing

If you have heard of "layering" you are in the right direction. Since the air pockets in between your clothes trap warm air it is better to wear multiple layers which can easily be removed or slipped on. Also, when hiking, start while cold and on the edge of shivering with few layers. You will quickly warm up. Don't forget that sweat is your enemy in winter because wet clothes won't dry and will wick warmth away from you as soon as you stop moving. Furthermore, synthetic clothing will be much warmer even if wet compared to cotton.

I usually wear a long sleeve base layer followed by a windproof/ waterproof thin jacket. For colder days I might add a fleece and I always have my big down parka for the times where I sit while snacking or eating lunch. Leggings are great under waterproof pants or alternatively snow pants for colder days. Plus, I bring a neck warmer, thin gloves, waterproof mitts and a tuque. Your footwear is also key and should consist in wool socks and warm winter boots. When snowboarding I only bring my snowboard boots along.

Tip #2 Winter Food

The best type of food for winter adventures consists in multiple snacks versus a big sit down meal. You would then loose too much heat while sitting still. Healthy fats and carbs are your best friends. They will provide you with long lasting energy and will provide heat as your body uses them. Avoid fresh vegetables or fruits since they have high water content that freezes in winter. On the other hand if you want to keep your granola/ protein bars soft put them in your pockets close to your body heat.

winter hydration

My best lunches are made up of meat pate, cheese and a baguette. As well as some dark chocolate for those extra boosts of energy and happiness. Jerky is also a great snack coupled with nuts, dry fruits and a thermos of hot chocolate or tea (read about dehydrating tips). But most importantly stay hydrated, even if it is freezing out there.

A great addition to anyone's backpack should be a thin foam pad. It will keep you warm and dry when sitting on the snow. So dress up, grab some food and get going on your next winter adventure!
